Dorothy Henke - Women of Inspiration 2016

Henke Associates.  Helps companies improve their profitability by analysing their information management.  Information is a resource, managed properly it empowers business owners to make the right decisions. In addition, by being more efficient, organisations can avoid duplication of data or data disappearing down black holes!  Have worked extensively with SAGE at all levels as well as with a range of ERP software.

What is your current role within the company?

Chamber: As above plus I organise events in conjunction with other business support organisations.

Henke Associates: I have also helped 3 authors produce eBooks and have shown them how to promote these on Kindle.

What is your background prior to working for this company/setting up your company?

Business Mentoring Co-ordinator for Forth Valley for 2 years. Matching businesses with mentors.

Over the course of my career I have been involved in various businesses/initiatives.

The Business Growth Club in Falkirk – ran this for 3 years

Women into Business in Forth Valley – ran this for 4 years

Business Growth adviser – both in Falkirk and  Stirling. Working with high growth companies to maximise their potential.

After graduating, I joined Burroughs in Cumbernauld and then spent 2 years at World Headquarters in Detroit. I  was then  invited to head up the systems department at the corporation’s flagship manufacturing facility in Livingston and was the youngest Systems Manager in the corporation. Was with the company for 9 years.

Along with my husband, we have owned a number of businesses ranging from printing, computer support to financial services. Twelve years ago we successfully sold our financial services company.  We now run a business called Readers Direct promoting my husband’s 15 novels.

What makes your company and/or your role stand out?

Sounds crazy but having a passion for what you do.  I love working with businesses who are passionate about succeeding. People who work hard and put their all into what they do. It is a privilege to be able to help them. They don’t work 9 to 5 and neither do I.  The satisfaction of being able to “make a difference” in the lives of others is hugely rewarding.

What is your area of expertise / inspiration?

Information management.  I am very analytical and can help businesses cut through the muddle in order to get the most out of what information they have.

Business Support. We are lucky in Scotland that we have great business support organisations like the Chamber and Business Gateway. I want to make sure that business owners are aware of all the support available.

What are your plans for the future?

“semi” retirement!  I can’t see me ever fully retiring but I am now at the point in my life when I can choose the type of work I do.  That will always include helping promote my husband’s novels but I will also make time to work with some dynamic business owners.

What inspires or motivates you?

Inspiration: My husband Paul!  He gave up a successful career in financial services to follow his dream of becoming a published author. He now has 14 books in print.  He works hard and loves every minute of what he does. I am also inspired by the business owners I have worked with who strive for success and work through immense challenges.

Motivation: Our children Richard and Louise are just amazing.  I can never be down for long when I think about them. As young adults they are meeting their own challenges as they go out into the world. It is a delight to see them blossom!

“I was both humbled and immensely honoured to have been named by ASB as one of 2016’s ten women. Especially once I had met some of the other nine and heard what they have achieved.”
