Val Russell - Women of Inspiration 2018

I had no grand plan when I started at the Chamber but I did have a few
basic ground rules I still hold dear in my role as CEO

What is your current role within the company?

Chief Executive.

What is your background prior to working for this company/setting up your company?

My background is in the hospitality sector at senior level followed by a period as a civil servant with       Jobcentreplus, with several  jobs in between, prior to joining the Chamber in 1999.

What makes your company and/or your role stand out?

I had no grand plan when I started at the Chamber but I did have a few basic ground rules I still hold     dear in my role as CEO

  Amongst these are:

  • Love what you do
  • Always be positive and proactive
  • Always say “yes” and “I can do that”  - figure out the rest later
  • Always do more than you are asked to do
  • Always look out for opportunities to learn, develop and improve.
  • When opportunities present themselves , be ready
  • When faced with challenges, take them on.

I hope I inspire my team to share the same rules. As a Chamber we have a reputation of being forward thinking and innovative and always willing to share our ideas with others.

What is your area of expertise / inspiration?

Customer focus and real ‘people person’

Supporting others to grow and reach their full potential whether that be businesses in Ayrshire, my team or the young people we work with in education.

What are your plans for the future?

To do more of what I do best - working in collaboration with others to grow the Ayrshire economy, create jobs, equip young people with the skills required for the world of work.

Make Ayrshire Chamber future proof through continual improvement

What inspires or motivates you?

The power of partnership and team working – no one can achieve everything on their own.  Bringing the right people together to work on common goals and nurturing others.

There is nothing more satisfying than being part of someone’s road to success and if I can use my role as CEO at Ayrshire Chamber to do that then I’m happy.
